Future Horizons application process

Important message regarding the Future Horizons Scholarship Program
Due to safety concerns associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the uncertainties regarding entry to Japan by persons from overseas, applications from students living outside Japan will not be accepted until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The process for applying for a Future Horizons scholarship involves several steps as outlined below.

Step 1 – Initial expression of interest

In order to gauge the suitability of potential candidates, submission of an initial expression of interest is required via completion of an online survey that may be accessed at the link below. Expressions of interest must be received by April 1 prior to the desired school year of admission.

After initial expressions of interest have been reviewed by our selection committee, candidates are contacted via e-mail. Only those who pass the screening process may proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 – Application documents

Candidates who pass the initial screening process are required to submit various documents as listed below. As these are required as soon as possible after receiving notification of having passed the initial screening process, you may wish to prepare them in advance; however, no documents should be submitted until you are requested to do so by the school.

After application documents have been reviewed by our selection committee, candidates are contacted via e-mail. Only those who pass the screening process may proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – Digital presentation

Shortlisted candidates are required to prepare and submit a 5-minute presentation in a digital format of their choice (a PowerPoint presentation, a video etc.). The presentation is used by the selection committee in making final decisions of acceptance. In the presentation, candidates should address each of the following points:

  • How the candidate’s personal context qualifies them for a scholarship
  • Personal qualities that will contribute to the candidate’s success in the IB Diploma Programme
  • The candidate’s record of academic excellence
  • The candidate’s commitment to making the world a better place
  • The candidate’s ability to contribute towards KIST attaining its school mission
  • The candidate’s goals
  • The candidate’s leadership experience.

After digital presentations have been reviewed by our selection committee, candidates are contacted via e-mail. Only those who pass the screening process may proceed to Step 4.

Step 4 – Interview

Candidates and their parents/guardians are required to participate in a final interview via Skype. This allows any points pertaining to the candidate’s application and aspects of the program to be clarified, and provides candidates with the opportunity to ask any questions they may have regarding the school and general life in Japan. Following the interview, candidates receive a final result via e-mail.

Step 5 – Enrollment procedures

As per the process for regular students, various enrollment documents are forwarded to successful candidates via e-mail for completion. These must be submitted to the school prior to the start of the school year.
