Secondary School

The Secondary School at KIST provides a challenging, high-level curriculum and a balanced range of enriching athletic, artistic and volunteering opportunities to academically motivated students as they progress from the Elementary School or join us from diverse educational backgrounds around the world. As they move through the three integrated curricular programs offered in the Secondary School, they are guided by our experienced faculty who motivate and support them in acquiring the higher level knowledge and academic skills they need for future success in university or beyond.

The Secondary School caters to over 300 students from Grades 6 through 12; each grade level is divided into two homeroom classes with a maximum of 24 to 26 students in each. The Secondary School is located in the Main Building of our Shirakawa campus. With the forthcoming construction of our new school building, however, the Secondary School will be split between two campuses with students in Grades 9 through 12 remaining at the current campus, and those in Grades 6 through 8 relocating temporarily to the nearby Nakamura Junior and Senior Girls’ High School campus until the completion of construction.

The Secondary School timetable is based on a six-period day of core lessons. The day begins at 8:45 a.m. with a morning Homeroom session and finishes at 3:40 p.m. on Tuesdays to Fridays, and 2:40 p.m. on Mondays. Following Homeroom, students move to different classrooms around the school depending on the subjects they study.

The curriculum in the Secondary School differs depending on the grade: students in Grades 6 through 8 follow the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme (MYP); students in Grades 9 and 10 study courses in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); and students in Grades 11 and 12 follow the International Baccalaureate’s academically challenging university preparation course, the Diploma Programme (DP). Weekly subject allocations for each general subject grouping are shown in the table below.

In addition to their academic subjects, all students have Advisory lessons each week. These lessons provide opportunities for students to participate in discussions on study habits, time management, social/interpersonal issues, academic skills, and university and career guidance, and also to work on preparing for upcoming activities such as events, excursions and tests.

As English is the language of instruction at KIST, various support systems are in place for students who require additional help in order to fully access the curriculum. In the Secondary School, these include:

  • differentiation of English courses;
  • the provision of in-class and out-of-class English language support for students at certain grades; and
  • the provision of a before-school Academic Writing course.

Secondary students take part in occasional learning excursions to locations in the local community or wider Tokyo metropolitan area to provide hands-on, real-world academic experiences and deepen their understanding of lesson content. All excursions link to specific aspects of the school curriculum and so provide important learning opportunities for all students. Students in Grades 7, 9 and 11 also have the opportunity to participate in overnight learning excursions.

In addition to academics, students have opportunities to join after-school club activities or to participate in a variety of school sporting teams that compete against other schools in and around Tokyo.
