Program progression and grade advancement

After gaining admission to KIST, students are expected to focus on their studies by making efforts to gain knowledge and develop skills to increasingly higher levels in preparation for advancement to higher grades and progression to higher educational programs. To ensure that students are ready for the challenges of higher grades and programs, and to maintain academic standards across the school, there are specific criteria that students must meet in order to progress through the school. Only students who meet the required standards are permitted to progress.

KIST defines the stages of program progression and grade advancement as follows:

Program progression

  • From ECE (Early Childhood Education) K3 to PYP Grade 1
  • From PYP Grade 5 to LSP Grade 6
  • From LSP Grade 8 to IGCSE Grade 9
  • From IGCSE Grade 10 to DP Grade 11

Grade advancement

  • From PYP Grade 3 to Grade 4
  • From PYP Grade 4 to Grade 5
  • From LSP Grade 6 to Grade 7
  • From LSP Grade 7 to Grade 8
  • From IGCSE Grade 9 to Grade 10
  • From DP Grade 11 to Grade 12

When considering a student for program progression or grade advancement, criteria within each of the following areas are considered. The specific criteria for each area are available to families after enrollment.

A. Social and emotional learning
B. Academic motivation and attitude to learning
C. Parental support and involvement
D. Attendance
E. Academic performance

Students who do not meet the required expectations may:

  • be advised or required to attend support classes before and/or after school;
  • be advised or required to attend the summer academic program held during the summer vacation;
  • progress to the next grade or educational program on a conditional basis;
  • be required to repeat a grade level; or
  • be denied progression to the next grade or educational program.

In principle, there are no requirements for advancement between the following grades, unless special circumstances exist as approved by the Head of School.

  • PYP K1 to K2
  • PYP K2 to K3
  • PYP Grade 1 to Grade 2
